Translation England's Jonathan Hemming will be attending the First International Conference on Audiovisual Translation (I Congreso Internacional de Traducción Audiovisual) in June in Lima, Perú. A great opportunity to learn from two audiovisual translation masters! This conference is organised by the Universidad César Vallejo in Lima. I hope to see you there!
CPD, or "Continuing Professional Development", is a necessity in all professional areas, but especially so in subtitling where trends are continuously changing and adapting to new technology. In a recent discussion on LinkedIn, "Tips for newbie subtitlers" (click here for the discussion), Vesna Zagar commented that,
"the best advice I could give a young translator who's just beginning to find his/her legs in this business is: remember that YOU KNOW NOTHING! You're just given the formal right to start learning. And in 20 years you will still be learning. There will never be a time when you'd just comfortably use your old knowledge. You'll have to learn for as long as you're doing this job. The minute you stop, you become useless because slang, science, politics etc are moving forward with an incredible rate and new words, phrases and expressions are born every day. If you fall behind you'll never catch up."
